Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

The Town of Carolina Shores is seeking qualified candidates to fill a vacant commissioner’s seat. Dee Gray resigned recently to relocate with his place of employment. The remaining term is 15 months. Please give this serious consideration and submit your letter of intent and resume to the town clerk. The deadline for submission is September 15, 2022.

There are residents trying to slow down cars in our neighborhood by standing on the roadside, yelling, and using hand motions in an effort to reduce alleged vehicle speeding. Should you witness this situation, please call 911 and report a person or persons is impeding traffic at a specific address and location. The Town has sent the following information.

Motor Vehicle Law 20-174.1. Standing, sitting, or lying upon highways or streets prohibited (a) No person shall willfully stand, sit or lie upon the highway or street in such a manner as to impede the regular flow of traffic. (b) Violation of this section is a Class 2 Misdemeanor.

We live in a world of social media and are overwhelmed with negative statements and insults. I encourage you not to participate as we all have enough negativity in our lives. Here is an interesting quote that could help us with these situations.

"Self-Control is strength. Calmness is mastery. You have to get to a point where your mood doesn't shift based on the insignificant actions of someone else. Do not allow others to control the direction of your life. Do not allow your emotions to overpower your intelligence."

Morgan Freeman

Deed of Restrictions and Rules & Regulations

Are you a new resident to Carolina Shores or just need to know more about our Deed of Restrictions (DoR) and the Rules & Regulations (R&R)? An informational meeting concerning the DoR and R&R will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at the POA clubhouse at 1:00 p.m. All residents, especially those new to the community, are encouraged to attend. Board members will be present to review, discuss and answer questions that you may have. This will be an opportunity for you to get more acquainted with the DoR and R&R that have been established to keep and increase the value and attractiveness of our community.

Refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there.

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

I would like to welcome all new homeowners to Carolina Shores. Please check that you have received the Deed of Restrictions (DoR) and the Rules and Restrictions (R&R) from the Real Estate Salesperson. These are extremely important documents to assist you when you need information about living in Carolina Shores. If you have not received these documents, please come to the CSPOA office to pick them up. Also, to assist new homeowners and any existing homeowners that are unfamiliar with these documents, the ACC, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, is having an open meeting on September 17, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at the CSPOA clubhouse located at 17 Lakeview Court, Carolina Shores. I recommend anyone that is not familiar with the documents to attend.

September is a transition month from the hot summer days to the cooler days and nights. This is a wonderful time to get into your garden to clean up and trim the shrubs, so they look great throughout this fall and into the holidays. This time of year is a GREAT time to add the winter fertilizer with weed preventer to help the grass grow strong and prevent those nasty winter weeds.

I want to thank everyone that has requested permits for work on the outside of their homes. This is not just a requirement of CSPOA, but this helps our community look as beautiful as we all like to see. Please enjoy driving through the neighborhood to admire your neighbors’ gardens and home.

I will do my best to help all that are having difficulties maintaining their homes and yards. My office has numerous trades that have done work within our community and our homeowners are pleased with their workmanship.

This brings me to another issue that I hope everyone will consider thinking about! I know that you may be upset by a neighbor from time to time. I recommend that you open your minds and hearts to discuss calmly to resolve things that upset you. Perhaps bring homemade cookies or a cake over to each other. This just may bring you both a little concession to respect each other. The ACC cannot resolve disputes!

A GOOD DEED: Through the generosity, kindness and hard work of one neighbor, an elderly neighbor with health problems had her yard cleaned up and avoided a violation of the DoR and R&R. This also helped her neighbors to make their street look nice. This is neighbor helping neighbor. Do you have a neighbor like this? Please show your kindness and help someone wherever possible.

JOE’S SAYING: “HELP ME HELP YOU”.

Garden Club Charlotte Csernecky

The Carolina Shores Garden Club is open to novice gardeners as well as those who have achieved the Master Gardener status. It’s a great way to learn all about what grows in this climate, how to maintain our particular trees and plants, as well as expanding our understanding of what impacts them. It’s also an excellent way to make new friends with like-minded neighbors.

Our first meeting in the fall will be on September 14, at 1:00 p.m. Our presenter will be Gary Baird, a professional photographer of wildlife photos. His topic is birds of the south.

The Garden Club meets the second Wednesday of the month, September to May, at 1:00 p.m., at the POA clubhouse, 17 Lakeview Ct. Dues are $10.00 per year. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 if you have any questions.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe reading selection for our August meeting was This Tender Land, a powerful novel by William Kent Krueger that took us on a journey with four children who have run away from an abusive, Depression era, Native American boarding school. As they travel along the banks of Minnesota’s Gilead River, they encounter adventure, hardship, and a cast of colorful characters, some good and some bad, in their search for a home and someone to love them. All who were present for the discussion felt this was an incredible book and would recommend it to others.

Also discussed at our August meeting was the “field trip” that we took to the Myrtle Beach Mall Movie Theater to see the film Where the Crawdads Sing, which was based on one of our recent reading selections. All who attended the movie enjoyed it and felt that the storyline followed the book very well.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, September 17, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA clubhouse. We will discuss the book Hanna’s Daughters by Marianne Fredriksson, and then select the books for our reading list for the upcoming twelve months. Each member is asked to submit one title to be included on our list. Guidelines for the books submitted are that you choose a book you personally have read, has been published within the last ten years, and is readily available to our group from the library or other source. If you cannot attend the meeting, please send your selection to Pat McKay. We won’t be having a luncheon after this meeting but hope to do so in the near future.

Interested individuals please call or email Margie Pettersen, 860-307-3175; kmem53@gmail.com

Care Team – Flo Pflaster

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgWe have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need do is call or email me!

For those of you who have volunteered to help others by being on the Care Team, here is how you make sure you are getting notifications when I post a request:

How to control all email notification settings (including groups)

1.      Log in to nextdoor.com and click your profile picture in the top right corner.

2.      Select Settings from the drop-down.

3.      Select Notifications from the left menu:

4.      Next to Email Notificationsselect Edit

5.      If you set Updates from your local area to None then you will not receive email notifications from your groups.

6.      If you set it to Only top posts or All you will get an email for every new group post. (choose this one)

Note: Adjusting these settings will affect all your email notifications, not just for groups.

If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. There are not many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they do get! It really does not take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed. So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I will do my best to find someone.

Thank you,
